Nearly $1.8 million awarded in CAT and Sports Tourism grants

January 11, 2024 (DES MOINES) – At today’s meeting, the Enhance Iowa Board awarded $1,775,000 in Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to a community center in Doon, a splash pad in Huxley, a trail project in Okoboji and a recreation center in Denison. Additionally, the board awarded a $4,000 Sports Tourism grant to promote the Kewash Trail Half Marathon.

Details for the projects receiving CAT grants follow:

Project Name: Doon Community Center, Doon
Total Project Cost: $3,176,534
Amount Awarded: $475,000
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a new community center which will contain a gym, fitness room, library, meeting room, kitchen and an open area that could be used for smaller meetings.

Project Name: Huxley Splash Pad, Huxley
Total Project Cost: $840,000
Amount Awarded: $100,000
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a new free-access, accessible splash pad at Nord Kalsem Park.

Project Name: Tatanka Ska Trace Phase IV(b), Lake Park and Spirit Lake
Total Project Cost: $1,135,427
Amount Awarded: $200,000
Project Description: This project includes the construction of 2.5 miles of trail that will provide Lake Park and Montgomery with direct access to the Spine Trail and West Okoboji Trail.

Project Name: Crawford County Recreation and Wellness Center, Denison
Total Project Cost: $18,857,500
Amount Awarded: $1,000,000
Project Description: This project will include an indoor walking track, one full-sized basketball/volleyball/pickleball court, two full-sized indoor soccer/football fields, a workout space, an aerobics room and a community meeting room.

Details for the project receiving a Sports Tourism Marketing grant follows:

The YMCA of Washington County was awarded $4,000 toward marketing the Kewash Trail Half Marathon in Washington on April 26, 2024. The funds will go toward digital and direct marketing channels.

The Enhance Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. To date, 136 CAT grants have been awarded by the board, totaling $ 46,435,023. The next Enhance Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for February 1, 2024.
